Independent owners most certainly set the prices they sell their gasoline for.
They purchase it bulk from refineries at a slight mark up, and then add their own mark up and blame it on fictitious things like increased demand(Canadians drive just as much in the winter as they do in the summer), shortages at a refinery, slight increases in oil prices( currently at $53/55 a barrel, while gas in town is selling for prices that reflect oil being at $100-$110 a barrel) and of course government taxes.
Revelstoke should wonder why gas is currently $1.13.9 in Sicamous while it's a $1.30.9 here when they receive the same refined gas, on the same Trans Canada highway, and pay the same federal and provincial taxes(Fed tax 10.0c, gst 5%, carbon tax 6.6c, provincial fuel tax 14.5c)
The businesses here are playing the community for fools and nothing will change until people here decide to no longer put up with the price gouging at 7/11, shell, esso, chevron, and fast gas.
